Reflecting on Half a Century at The University of Melbourne
In 2023, the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences (DOVS) is delighted to be celebrating our 50th anniversary. Throughout the year-long celebration, events and activities were organised to commemorate the department's legacy, honour our journey, and embrace the future.
50 Years in 50 Weeks campaign
Through the 50 Years in 50 Weeks campaign, the people and events that shaped the department were highlighted. The campaign showcased photographs that represent the dedicated staff, students, and alumni who, since 1973, have played an integral role in shaping a remarkable 50-year legacy of optometry and vision sciences research, clinical excellence, and education.
Seeing Beyond Lectures
Two special ‘Seeing Beyond Lectures’ series were held in March and July, featuring a look back over the history of collaborations, therapeutic and research advances and trailblazers for diversity and inclusion as well as discussions on the future of optometric education and Australian optometry, and the global impact of the department's research capabilities. The lectures were sold-out and have drawn in more than 200 alumni, who return to join the department in celebration.
Gala Dinner Celebration
The Golden Anniversary Gala Dinner on 10 September was the year's highlight, featuring speeches from two previous Heads of Department – Professor Algis Vingrys and Professor Allison McKendrick, and current Head of Department, Associate Professor Andrew Metha. Andrew paid tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Barry Cole AO, the department's founder, for his vision of advancing optometry through scientific evidence. He emphasised the department's dedication to research, education, and healthcare delivery, with a bright outlook for the future thanks to the ongoing contributions of researchers, staff, educators, and clinical partners.
