Thank You to Professor Cathy Humphreys for 17 Years of Outstanding Contributions to the Department
As the year ends, we celebrate the career of Professor Cathy Humphreys.
Cathy is retiring after 47 years of dedicated service as a social worker and academic, including 17 years at the University of Melbourne. Cathy's journey has been marked by staunch commitment, notable achievements, and an outstanding legacy as an educator. Cathy shared that she has experienced many rewarding moments at the University, but her involvement in supervising 36 PhD students stands out as something incredibly special.
When asked about the future of social work, Cathy highlights the need to develop social workers in areas of disaster and emergencies, as well as the need to make sure social workers with intersectionality are heard, responded to and valued. She also encourages social workers to maintain their passion and look after themselves with the support from healthy workforces. With the increasingly limited resources and growing inequalities in current societies, Cathy urges the further development of support and networks that allow social workers to gain satisfaction, appreciation and enjoyment.
