The Department of Social Work’s Graduate Research and PhD programs strive to improve health and wellbeing through national and international collaboration. Underpinned by Indigenous leadership and methodological pluralism, the department aims to reinforce community ties and connect research to practice in areas of policy, teaching and training. The Department of Social Work proudly supports scholarly pathways for Indigenous academics to lead research projects and create a network of new generation Indigenous supervisors.

Our Students

The Department of Social Work is seeking high achieving students who are curious, committed, and have the desire to translate knowledge and change systems to promote positive wellbeing outcomes. The Department offers three graduate pathway options: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and a Master of Advanced Social Work (Research).

Career Opportunities

Graduate Research and PhD studies in Social Work build on consolidating and enhancing leadership skills through new knowledge and evidence, informed practice and refined research skills. Students have part-time study options to facilitate work, study and family life balance. Career opportunities include moving into management, pursuing an academic career, and further developing workplace skills.

Applying for Social Work Graduate Research

Students are required to find two potential supervisors before they submit their application. The Department of Social Work will work with students to match their research interests with the Department’s key specialisations and to assist them in identifying the most appropriate supervision team. Scholarships are awarded to student applicants with the highest Weighted Average Marks (WAM).
