New model helps physiotherapists navigate the complexity of pelvic health

A new Pelvic Health Clinical Reasoning Model developed by University of Melbourne Physiotherapy lecturers and expert clinicians could help physiotherapists better understand and manage complex conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic pain. While existing physiotherapy clinical reasoning models tend to focus on pain and musculoskeletal problems, many pelvic health conditions are not always painful and are influenced by a much wider range of factors.

The new Pelvic Health Clinical Reasoning Model recognises the complex interplay between pelvic organ function, the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system and psychosocial factors, such as a person's thoughts, beliefs and behaviours. It provides clinicians with a structured framework to identify and consider the many factors that may contribute to a person's symptoms and how those factors interact.

By encouraging a holistic view of pelvic health, the model helps physiotherapists build a more complete picture of an individual's condition and tailor treatment to their specific needs, supporting a better understanding of complex pelvic health presentations and ultimately improving patient care.
