Interdisciplinary placement in Cambodia

Last month, students across Audiology, Optometry and Physiotherapy accompanied by Dr Christopher Waterworth and Dr Peter Carew travelled to Cambodia for an interdisciplinary placement experience.

Since 2016, the Department of Audiology has actively supported the development of audiology services at the Children’s Surgical Center in Phnom Penh, including training local clinicians, establishing diagnostic and rehabilitation services, and running student clinical placements. This time however, optometry and physiotherapy students joined the placement, making this the first interdisciplinary placement at the hospital.

This placement provided an excellent opportunity for collaborative practice and teamwork as well as sharing and learning interprofessional knowledge to both enrich student experiences and improve patient care and health outcomes. Experiences like this are rich in learning opportunities which help support various aspects of professional practice development as students become the future workforce.
