Gender-Affirming Voice Clinic now offering services to transmasculine people
The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology’s Gender-Affirming Voice Clinic (in partnership with the Melbourne Speech Pathology Clinic) will now be offering services to benefit transmasculine people. This extension of the Clinic’s current service is funded by the Diversity and Inclusion team at The University of Melbourne.
So far, the clinic has focused on research and clinical activities aimed to support transfeminine people, examining a group treatment model and producing materials and workbooks with community input. The workbooks provide a sustainable and tangible resource to both gender-affirming voice consumers and to students on placement, with information on high-quality evidence-based care.
Eight Master of Speech Pathology Students had the opportunity to examine this model of care and have had their work accepted at a national conference. This group model has shown significant savings in cost with voice outcomes comparable to individual training, amongst other benefits. The new funding will extend this to serve transmasculine staff and students in our community.
