Successful application for an MDHS Graduate Research Development Grant for MSHS
We are thrilled to announce that A/Prof Selina Parry, Prof Laura Downie, Alisha da Silva, Rajni Rajan, Erin Hunter, Prof Catherine Granger, Dr Flora Hui, Prof Bruce Thompson and Danielle Galvin (pictured top left to bottom right, picture missing: Danielle Galvin) have been successful in their recent application for an MDHS Graduate Research Development Grant for 'Research is Incomplete until it is communicated: an interactive, fit for purpose program for graduate researchers'.
Graduate researchers become experts in their chosen research fields. To engage and improve the impact and influence of their research with the public, we need to equip our graduate researchers with the required knowledge, skills, and self-confidence.
The research funding will enable the team to develop, implement and evaluate a bespoke media science communication training program to support graduate researchers in improving their self-confidence and skills in science communication with the public. The team draws on their hands on expertise in media/science communication, as well as active roles in the Faculty Media team (Danielle Galvin) and national media training (ABC Top 5 Science Fellows – Catherine Granger and Flora Hui).
We look forward to bringing a suite of activities and training to develop expertise and skills across the different settings in which science communication may occur. This will include print, radio, social media, television and providing graduate researchers with the necessary skills and confidence to articulate their work to the public. Participants will also have an opportunity to undertake outreach science communication to enable opportunities for hands on practical 'real life' application in science communication with the general public through settings such as local community organisations and/or inspiring STEMM in primary and/or secondary schools.
The year long program will culminate with a half day event, 'The scientific art of storytelling from jargon to human' Pitch-athon Event, as part of the Festival of Health Sciences in the latter part of 2024.
