Sound Field Systems: A Useful Support for Inclusive Classroom Learning
A recent study by Lucy Shiels, Dr Peter Carew, Prof Dani Tomlin and Prof Gary Rance has explored the impact of sound field amplification systems on reading fluency in primary school classrooms. Published in NPJ Science of Learning, the study examined 84 students aged 8-10 years across 23 grade 3 and 4 classes over three academic terms.
The research investigated whether sound field systems - which include a speaker array connected to a teacher-worn microphone - could improve academic progress. While previous evidence has shown that these systems enhance access to teacher instructions and reduce vocal strain, their effect on learning outcomes has been less clear.
The findings revealed that although sound field amplification did not significantly improve overall reading fluency development, it offered advantages to students with lower cognitive abilities. This suggests that sound field systems could be a valuable support tool, especially given that most classrooms are noisy and acoustically suboptimal. As mainstream classrooms increasingly accommodate children with diverse learning needs, creating inclusive environments is crucial. The study contributes to our understanding of how to optimise classroom acoustics, potentially benefiting students with listening difficulties and supporting a wide range of learners.
