Physiotherapy department grant success

Congratulations to three researchers from the Department of Physiotherapy who have recently been awarded grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC); Professor Kim Bennell, Professor Alicia Spittle and Dr Rachel Toovey.

Professor Kim Bennell received an NHMRC Leadership 3 (L3) Investigator Grant tilted "Optimising lifestyle care to reduce the burden of knee and hip osteoarthritis." Professor Bennell’s research will determine ways to boost the benefits of exercise, and to design and evaluate new treatment models that improve access to lifestyle care for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. The ultimate aim of Professor Bennell’s research is that more people with osteoarthritis will receive better lifestyle care to improve outcomes. See more on Kim's grant success here.

Professor Alicia Spittle was awarded an NHMRC Leadership 2 (L2) Investigator Grant tilted “Optimising developmental outcomes for children born preterm using digital health solutions.” Professor Spittle’s research is focused on addressing knowledge gaps in access to early intervention to improve developmental outcomes for babies born preterm. Professor Spittle’s research program involves trialling digital health solutions to enable early detection of developmental impairments and delivery of targeted interventions, thereby improving long-term developmental outcomes for children born preterm. Dr Rachel Toovey led a team who received an NHMRC Partnership Grant titled “Linking young people with disability to participation through cycling: Implementation and evaluation of the co-designed CycLink program.” In partnership with a wide range of collaborators, including researchers from LaTrobe University, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Australian Catholic University, and Deakin University, this project aims to implement and evaluate a co-designed cycling program to improve participation of children with disability in their local community. Congratulations to Professor Bennell, Spittle and Dr Toovey – we can’t wait to see the outcomes of your research!
