Lived Experience leadership in shaping mental health research

The session showcased the important role of lived experience in shaping mental health research focused on Community Treatment Orders, highlighting how people with lived experience of the mental health system are leading and influencing research that relates directly to their communities.

Open to the public, the online session welcomed more than 40 attendees from across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The strong turnout demonstrated growing international interest in lived experience leadership in mental health reform and research.

The aim of the event was to share the progress, insights, and contributions of the LEAP within the FaCTORS project to date. Panel members illustrated how lived experience is embedded throughout the research process - from design and decision-making through to communication and advocacy.

The program was curated and facilitated by LEAP members and centred around three key themes:

• Creative Expression – Four speakers shared personal stories of mental health and recovery using artforms such as music, painting, and theatre.
• Lived Experience Research – A panel reflected on their involvement in FaCTORS, exploring the value and impact of lived experience–driven inquiry.
• Intersectionality – Panel members discussed layered experiences of mental health, emphasising how identity factors can shape access, rights, and outcomes.

Attendees praised the authenticity and courage shown by presenters, noting that the event deepened their understanding of how lived experience can enrich and transform research.
