Latest success stories in DOVS
The Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences continues to lead in impactful research, educational innovation, and academic excellence. Over recent months, members of our department have secured major funding grants and been recognised for their leadership and contributions to health professional education. These achievements reflect the strength, dedication, and future potential of our team.
Supporting emerging research talent
Dr Bao Nguyen was recently awarded a Research Impetus Grant ($49,783) by The University of Melbourne, a scheme to help early-career and mid-career researchers who have experienced significant career disruption/s regain their research momentum. The grant will support her to progress her research program, continue to build partnerships and networks, and make the most of travel opportunities.
In addition, Dr Sena Gocuk has received the University of Melbourne's Early Career Researcher (ECR) Grant, a competitive schemed designed to support emerging researchers in undertaking high-quality projects. The grant aims to strengthen research track records, while enhancing their capability and competitiveness for future funding opportunities.

Advancing research infrastructure
A team from our department (Bao Nguyen, Bang Bui, Angela Hall, Christine Nguyen) has been awarded a Research Infrastructure Investment Fund - Collaborative Equipment Grant Scheme (RIIF-CEG, $245,720). This grant will enable the purchase of cutting-edge eye imaging equipment that supports our Department's collaborative work, with co-investment from multiple faculties (MDHS, FEIT).

Recognising leadership in education
In July, A/Prof Anthea Cochrane was one of six University of Melbourne staff members recognised through the Australia and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) Fellowship Scheme, which celebrates excellence and leadership in health professional education. As an Associate Fellow, she’ll contribute to mentoring and professional development within the sector, reinforcing our department’s commitment to educational leadership and fostering the next generation of health educators.
