For Social Betterment book launch

On World Social Work day, 19 March, the Department of Social Work supported the launch of Dr Jane Miller’s (AM) book ‘For Social Betterment: Social Work Education in Australia’ in collaboration with Monash University Publishing.

Jane is a well-respected alumnus member of the Department of Social Work, a retired social worker, and a life member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). She's authored several books documenting the ways social work education has been established in Victoria and abroad.

‘For Social Betterment: Social Work Education in Australia’ describes the history of Australian social work education from 1900 to 1960. Jane details a fight for standards and the determination of a group of people to improve care and conditions for those most vulnerable in the community. Jane's book also reflects on why the rights of women and First Nations people were overlooked for so long, and examines the future challenges for social work in Australia.

The book launch event began with a 'meet the author' conversation hosted by Professor Lou Harms, Chair and Head of the Department of Social Work, followed by the official launch by AASW CEO Cindy Smith.

Once again, congratulations to Dr Jane Miller AM - not many people achieve turning their PhD thesis into a book.
