MSHS attends Dreamtime at the 'G

On Friday 23 May, fifty staff and graduate researchers from the School of Health Sciences attended the AFL's annual Dreamtime at the ’G match and the pre-game Walk to the 'G.

The event is held during Reconciliation Week and provides a platform to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and culture and promote reconciliation. This year's events consisted of the pre-match ‘Long Walk’ from Birrarung Marr to the MCG, followed by a vibrant cultural ceremony with First Nations dancers and music, and then finally the AFL match between Essendon and Richmond at the MCG.

The Long Walk is a walk inspired by former Essendon player Michael Long, who raised awareness and funds for First Nations communities by walking to Canberra in 2004. This annual walk brings people together in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and education.

It was a wonderful opportunity for colleagues to stand alongside each other, learn about and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and histories, and help promote reconciliation. This year's theme for Reconciliation Week is “Bridging Now to Next”, emphasising the importance of building respectful relationships and learning from the past to foster understanding and appreciation for each other and promote positive future change.
