DASP's Wellbeing Initiative: Fostering Connections
The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology (DASP) piloted a wellbeing initiative this semester to foster a sense of community and support within the department by providing students with dedicated time and space to connect with staff and peers. For two hours each week, DASP students were invited to utilise a designated area at 550 Swanston St., creating a space that encouraged both study and social interaction.
Sessions on Wednesdays involved students from both disciplines with the aim to foster interdisciplinary connections between audiology and speech pathology students. Additionally, Friday sessions were dedicated solely to speech pathology students, allowing for more focused interactions within this specific discipline.
Students have reported finding these sessions helpful, using the time to engage in collaborative study with their peers and to seek guidance from staff members. This dedicated period has allowed for more informal and relaxed interactions, breaking down barriers and creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas.
Staff members have also noted that it has provided a valuable opportunity to connect with students in a less formal setting. Moreover, the initiative has had the unexpected benefit of fostering stronger relationships among staff members themselves. The shared time has allowed for impromptu discussions, idea exchanges, and a general strengthening of departmental camaraderie. This positive outcome demonstrates that the wellbeing initiative has far-reaching benefits, enhancing the overall atmosphere and cohesion within DASP.
