Congratulating Associate Professor Catherine Granger on winning the Award for Excellence in Graduate Researcher Supervision
The Melbourne Research Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding contributions towards high-impact research and building a world-leading research community, including recognition of mid-career researchers, external partnerships, collaborations across disciplinary boundaries, and graduate research supervision.
Individuals receiving the Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision require a sustained record of high-quality graduate researcher supervision at the University. This year the Award for Excellence in Graduate Researcher Supervision has been awarded to Melbourne School of Health Sciences’ Associate Professor Catherine Granger, who has demonstrated supervision practices that develop her graduate researchers’ skills both in research and more broadly, developing them into well-rounded, independent, and successful researchers in their chosen fields.
Since completing her PhD in 2013, A/Prof Granger has supervised seven PhD and one MPhil students to completion, and currently supervises five PhD students. Through her quality supervision, her graduate researchers have received various scholarships and grants including from NHMRC, Australian Rotary Health, American Thoracic Society and Physiotherapy Research Foundation. Her students have collectively published 40 papers, received 13 awards and given six international and 30 national oral conference presentations from their studies.
In addition to supervising her students, A/Prof Granger is also on the advisory committee for graduate researchers and has contributed to the development and practice of high-quality supervision practices to foster a nurturing and inspiring environment for MSHS candidates to excel. Highlights in 2022 include the introduction of laptops for all graduate researchers and to student professional development financial allowances. She also successful led as CIA a 2022 Faculty of MDHS Graduate Researcher Development Grant titled ‘Inspiring diversity in career pathways for clinician graduate researchers’, focusing on mentoring and career development to support the transition from PhD to employment. Furthermore, she was awarded the 2022 MSHS Graduate Research Supervision Award in recognition of her excellence.
