Collaboration Between Social Work and Law Transforms Lives

Dr Jennifer Davidson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, is leading research on the integration of social work and legal services. Her recent article in the Law Society Journal showcases the transformative impact of health justice partnerships across Australia.

At least 67 integrated programs currently exist in Australia, where social workers, psychologists, and other allied health professionals work alongside lawyers to provide comprehensive support to clients. These partnerships are proving particularly effective in areas such as elder abuse, family law, youth law, criminal law, and tenancy issues.

Dr Davidson's research identifies four key factors for successful integration of social work and legal services: management support, awareness of professional skills, dedicated funding, and mutual respect among all roles.

These findings are already influencing how legal aid services structure their support for vulnerable clients. As one lawyer noted, "Working alongside allied professionals has been a game-changer."

This innovative approach not only improves client outcomes but also enhances the practice of both social workers and lawyers.
