Teaching specialists present at international conference

Four members of our teaching team had the honour of presenting at Ottawa 2024.

Ottawa is an international conference held biennially to provide a forum for medical and other healthcare professions educators to network and share ideas on all aspects of the assessment of competence in both clinical and non-clinical domains, throughout the continuum of education.

The February 2024 conference was an excellent opportunity for our teaching specialists, A/Prof Karen Donald, Jessica Lees, Dr Sonya Moore, and Dr Jessica Stander, to share the Department of Physiotherapy's innovations in assessment design with an international audience, specifically those implemented in the Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) and online graduate courses.

Dr. Sonya Moore presented the results of a scoping review that explored entrustable professional activities (EPAs) in Health Professions Education. She also demonstrated how social constructivist learning design principles can be applied to embed a Shared Decision Making (SDM) EPA within the Graduate Rehab Science program.

Jessica Lees introduced ePortfolios as a platform for delivering programmatic assessment in the refreshed Doctor of Physiotherapy curriculum. She specifically focused on the innovations and challenges associated with using ePortfolios to develop self-regulated learning and self-authorship among physiotherapy students.

A/Prof Karen Donald and Dr Jessica Stander presented findings from an interprofessional Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences study exploring the use of mandatory attendance hurdles. Jess firstly presented findings from a systematic review exploring the efficacy on attendance to hurdles to student learning and performance. Karen went on further to share findings from an interprofessional survey, describing the experiences, attitudes and beliefs related to attendance hurdles for practical classes in health professional education and comparing these results to the findings of the scoping review.
