University of Melbourne Social Work Alumni Association (UMSWAA) Morning Tea: A Day of Reflection and Recognition
UMSWAA and the Department of Social Work were delighted to host a morning tea for alumni at Graduate House last week on the 30 July 2024. This event was attended by around fifty alumni from various graduate cohorts, offering ample opportunities to socialise and reconnect. We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this event.
Head of Department Louise Harms opened the gathering with a warm welcome, expressing gratitude to all attendees and acknowledging those who were unable to be present.
Emeritus Professor Dorothy Scott AM gave an insightful presentation on the biographies of notable social workers, both international and local. She highlighted the contributions of historical figures like Helen Harris Perlman and Clare Winnicott to child and family welfare. Scott also shared stories of resilience and innovation from social workers such as Irena Sendler, Sattareh Farman Farmaian, and Olive Stevenson, showing how their experiences have shaped social work practices and policies worldwide.

The celebrations began with an acknowledgment by Deputy President of UMSWAA, Miriam Suss OAM, who honoured alumni featured in this year's King’s Birthday Honours list. Recognised for their dedicated service to the community through social welfare roles, honorees included Libby Saunders (OAM) and Maureen Anne McInerney (OAM). Emeritus Professor Thea Brown (AM) was celebrated for her significant contributions to social welfare, particularly in family violence and child protection research. Miriam also acknowledged Helen Margot Murray (AM), who was featured in the Australia Day 2024 Honours list for her impactful work as a social worker and educator.
It is wonderful recognition of the outstanding contributions members of our Alumni have made.

The event concluded on a high note, with Professor Louise Harms presenting Dr Jane Miller AM with the prestigious Hyslop Medal. The medal recognises alumni or staff whose outstanding contributions have been integral to the success of social work at the University. This honor is truly well-deserved.
