3TLA clinical trial expands to Canada

BEST is pleased to announce that our clinical trial 3TLA, a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of polysomnographic titration of non-invasive ventilation in motor neurone disease, has officially expanded into Canada with support from the Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACT) / Accélérer les Essais Cliniques (AEC) Consortium. Dr Reshma Amin is the Chief Investigator for the Canadian component of the study. She is based at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, which will also act as the sponsoring organisation for this phase of the trial.

Coordinating Principal Investigator David Berlowitz, Trial Manager Yasmin Ahamed, and Trial Monitor Kate Carey travelled to Canada in September 2025 to complete start-up activities at the multi-province data collection sites. The team met with clinical and research staff, delivered site training and worked closely with local teams to support readiness for participant recruitment. The trial will recruit participants at four Canadian sites:

  • Sunnybrook Hospital (Toronto, Ontario) – led by Dr Anu Tandon
  • Peter Lougheed Centre and University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta) – led by Dr Kevin Solverson
  • University of Alberta Hospital (Edmonton, Alberta) – led by Dr Cheryl Laratta
  • Misericordia Health Centre and University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba) – led by Associate Professor Eleni Giannouli

The visit was a valuable opportunity to strengthen international partnerships and reaffirm our shared commitment to improving care for people living with motor neurone disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. BEST is delighted to welcome our Canadian colleagues to the trial and look forward to future collaborations.
