Welcoming Prof Mei Krishnasamy to the Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing is proud to announce the appointment of Professor Mei Krishnasamy as Professor of Nursing. With a distinguished career in cancer nursing research, Prof Krishnasamy brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to her new role.

Internationally recognised for her work in patient experiences and outcomes research, Prof Krishnasamy has a proven track record of collaborative research aimed at enhancing patient and carer experiences throughout the cancer journey. Her focus on equity of access to care for vulnerable populations underscores her commitment to addressing the impact of social determinants of health on cancer outcomes.

In her role at the University of Melbourne, Department of Nursing, Prof Krishnasamy will further develop her cancer nursing research program while mentoring graduate research students and nurturing research capacity within the department. This work will complement the significant nurse leadership role she has within the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Alliance. Prof Krishnasamy's vision extends beyond academia, emphasising the critical role of nurses as frontline advocates for patients and the importance of equipping them with the skills to drive innovation and improve healthcare outcomes.

Expressing her enthusiasm for joining the University of Melbourne, Prof Krishnasamy shared her thoughts on her new role:

“This role offers me an opportunity to build nursing research capability and capacity through contributing to the wealth of educational programs offered by the Department of Nursing and engaging with new graduate research students. This is a longstanding passion and focus of my work.”

“Nurses are the front line of defense for patients - wherever they access care. Ensuring nurses have the critical skills to evaluate and innovate at patient and system levels is essential to improve patient experience, outcomes, and system-level efficiency”.

“In my role of Professor of Nursing, I look forward to strengthening existing and building new research collaborations across the School of Health Sciences, the Faculty, and the University more broadly. I am particularly looking forward to strengthening partnerships and driving research initiatives with regional and rural colleagues.”
