2026 Marian Barrett Lecture | 30 Years of Nursing
Is nursing at a crossroad? Maximising our contribution to health outcomes in Australia
On Tuesday May 12, International Nurses Day, the Department of Nursing was pleased to host the annual Marian Barrett Lecture at the Ian Potter Auditorium. This year, the department also celebrated 30 years of Nursing at The University of Melbourne with our keynote presenter Professor Sanchia Aranda AM - the third Head of Nursing. We were also honoured to welcome the foundation Professor and Head of the School of Nursing at The University of Melbourne Emeritus Professor Judith Parker in attendance.

The hybrid event explored the challenges that continue to face the profession at a time when nurses are needed more than ever. In line with this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” Professor Aranda’s presentation examined the structural changes required to fully harness the power of the nursing workforce. Following the lecture, Dr Emma Jeffs delivered an alumni address, leading into the acknowledgement of our department’s prize and award winners. The event concluded with a cocktail reception, featuring a celebratory 30th anniversary cake, which provided a welcome opportunity for networking.
