About CAP

The Consumer Academic Program was first developed in 2013 with one senior academic role and has grown steadily since. The CAP is unique in the Victorian landscape as a team of lived experience academics with a diverse range of consumer perspectives and expertise. As a team, we hold consumer perspective experience in education, governance, management, and workforce development and bring this expertise to research and training initiatives at the CentreMHN.

We bring academic excellence and sector expertise to a range of research, training and workforce initiatives. Our key work includes:

  • One-off and ongoing consultations with the wider MH sector, for example the establishment of the Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Consumer Lived Experience workforce development projects, such as the foundation document – the Consumer Lived Experience Discipline Framework (Victoria)
  • Liaising with the sector, in particular the consumer lived experience workforce
  • Review and evaluation processes for lived experience initiativesTranslational research projects
  • Leading in co-production research, education and training with the sector
  • Sought as representatives for expert knowledge groups and panels for the sector
  • Authorship and co-authorship of publications and reports
  • Working with the internal and external partners within the University, including the Department of Health, Melbourne Law School and the Social Equity Insititute
  • Presenting our work at conferences in this country and abroad
  • Supporting CAP members to undertake PhD programs.
