The University of Melbourne Optometry Student Society (UMOSS) is the official representative body for Doctor of Optometry (OD) students at the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne Optometry Student Society (UMOSS) is the official representative body for Doctor of Optometry (OD) students at the University of Melbourne. Since its establishment in 1948, UMOSS has been committed to enriching the OD student experience by fostering social connections, professional networking, and academic growth. Our mission is to represent and advocate for students in the OD program.
UMOSS hosts a dynamic lineup of events throughout the year, starting with Welcome Back Night at the beginning of each semester. In Semester 1, students can participate in the exciting Eyemazing Race, while Semester 2 features major social highlights such as the highly anticipated Eyeball and the Annual Boat Cruise. Other events include Trivia Night and the Charity Bake Sale, both held in Semester 2.
Beyond social gatherings, UMOSS also organises events that provide networking opportunities with leading companies, past graduates, and potential future employers within the broader optometry industry. These include educational seminars where industry representatives and renowned practicing clinicians teach students about a wide range of topics, from clinical techniques and knowledge to new developments in the technology that creates the diagnostic and therapeutic tools that optometrists use daily.
In addition to social and networking events, we also support students academically through educational seminars, peer-assisted programs, and initiatives such as the “Big Brother Big Sister” mentorship program. These programs typically occur in Semester 1 and aim to foster a supportive learning environment and encourage collaboration to enhance academically.
