On Wednesday, 4 September 2024, the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences proudly hosted the flagship 2024 Seeing Beyond Lecture, featuring Tim Fricke from the Australian College of Optometry's inspiring presentation, "Grand and Simple Plans in Optometry. " Tim’s presentation shed light on both visionary and practical approaches to advancing the field of optometry, sparking engaging discussions among attendees and leaving everyone with fresh perspectives.

As the Director of Research and Education at the Australian College of Optometry and Senior Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Tim holds clinical, teaching, research, management & leadership roles in private, public, community health, hospital & refugee camp settings. He has extensive paediatric clinical experience, supervised post-graduate research in paediatric eye care and health economics, taught undergraduate & post-graduate eye care courses, & provided continuing professional development across Australia & internationally. Tim has researched vision development, epidemiology, quality of life & access to eye care, & assisted in developing local systems and skills for providing primary and specialised eye care in Australia, Tanzania, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and elsewhere.
Following the inspiring lecture, guests were invited to take part in an exclusive guided tour of the Department's cutting-edge research spaces within the Kenneth Myer Building. This special opportunity allowed attendees to delve deeper into the innovative work being conducted by the Department's researchers in the labs.
From optometry professionals to students and our alumni, the lecture was filled with familiar and new faces alike. It was wonderful to see our optometry community come together in such a meaningful way.
