Physiotherapy Graduate Research
The Department of Physiotherapy offers graduate research programs in a range of areas including musculoskeletal and sports, paediatrics, neurological conditions, women’s health, sleep medicine, cancer and acute cardiorespiratory conditions, gerontology, and digital health.
The Department of Physiotherapy provides a friendly and supportive learning environment. You’ll study alongside talented peers in an environment focused on research impact and relevance and be supervised by leading experts in your field. We currently have over 40 graduate research students enrolled.
Our multidisciplinary research centre, the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine (CHESM) is administered through the Department of Physiotherapy. CHESM combines high calibre researchers with experienced clinicians from a range of disciplines including physiotherapy, medicine, exercise science and podiatry. CHESM also has a number of internationally recognised clinical associates and research collaborators.
The Department works alongside clinical partners including Austin Health, Western Health, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Women’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital. Several of our research teams are embedded within these clinical partners.

Applying for Graduate Research
The Department of Physiotherapy engages with potential students and participates in preliminary screening. Students are required to find a potential supervisor before they submit their application. The Department of Physiotherapy has a broad range of expertise and will work with potential candidates to identify the most appropriate supervision team. Scholarships are awarded to student applicants with the highest Weighted Average Marks (WAM).
