The Launch of the Mental Health Consumer Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework
We are proud to announce the launch of the Mental Health Consumer Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework on Thursday 20th March 2025. The Framework is not just a document — it is a reflection of the ongoing evolution of the Mental Health Consumer Lived Experience Workforce in Victoria.

The Framework highlights the foundational values and principles, theories and knowledge, and scope of practice that are essential to creating a workforce that is both supported and sustainable.
The Framework acknowledges the significance of First Nations perspectives, integrating First Nations knowledge to support the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations consumers and consumer workers alike. It advocates for inclusivity, recognising the diverse experiences within the workforce and the need for inclusive practices that address varying social identities.
With our own discipline framework, we have a seat at the table alongside all other workforce disciplines. A framework can also help to make ethical decisions, because it sets out the values and principles guiding the work. Because this Framework has been developed by consumer workers for consumer workers, we expect in turn, it will also improve experiences for consumers they work with. Finally, this Framework aims to provide ideas and information that can help consumer workers to put words to experiences they might not yet have found language to express.
The Framework is part of a suite of five discipline frameworks for the lived and living experience workforces (LLEW) in Victoria:
- The Mental Health Consumer Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework (Victoria)
- The Mental Health Family Carer Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework (Victoria)
- The Harm Reduction Lived and Living Experience Peer Workforce Discipline Framework (Victoria)
- The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework (Victoria)
- The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Family Lived Experience Workforce Discipline Framework (Victoria)
These projects were made possible with funding from the Victorian Department of Health.
